Title:Combustion Kinetics: From Solid Propellant to Liquid Fuel

Speaker:

Prof. Dongping Chen

Beijing Institute of Technology

Time: Dec.1st (Friday) 3pm

Location:A-559,Lee Shau Kee Building of Science and Technology

Abstract:

The study of combustion reaction kinetics is crucial in aerospace propulsion systems. However, the complexity of solid propellants and liquid fuels limits the study of combustion kinetics, hindering the resolution of key issues in practical systems. This talk will focus on recent work undertaken by our research group and collaborators in the field of combustion kinetics, specifically in the areas of molecular simulation of solid propellants and the development of HyChem models for liquid fuels. Examples will be provided, showcasing recent progress and future development directions in molecular simulation of various solid propellants (e.g., HTPB, NEPE, NC/NG propellant, and PBX explosive) with the DeepMD force field. Additionally, the speaker will give a brief introduction to the development of HyChem models for liquid fuels RP-3 and JP-10, emphasizing the verification and evaluation of their fundamental combustion characteristics.

Bio:

Prof. Dongping Chen, an Associate Professor and Ph.D. Supervisor at Beijing Institute of Technology, holds a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford. His main research areas include numerical simulation at the microscale, combustion kinetics, and reaction kinetics of energetic materials. He has published over 60 academic papers, including Carbon, Combustion and Flame, and Proceedings of the Combustion Institute. In the past five years, he hosted seven national projects, including the projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and National Key Laboratories. As a core developer, he invented the first software supporting Chemistry Metaverse (Manta), of which the underlying core technology (VR-enabled modeling) was recognized by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) as one of the "Top 10 Emerging Chemistry Technologies in 2022".
