Abstract:

Dense suspensions are known for their ability to resist flow due to interactionsbetween particles. For instance, attractive interactions favor the emergence of ayieldstress, while frictional particles can exhibit shear-thickening, i.e., a drasticincrease in viscosity. In confined geometries, interparticle friction and/or adhesiorlead to the formation of clogs. By considering frictionless, non-adhesive particles inthe absence of attractive interactions, we isolate the influence of particle geometry onthe clogging of a dense suspension flowing through a constriction. In particular, shapenon-convexities enable interlocking between particles, which can strongly affect theprobability of clog formation. Here, we experimentally investigate model interlockincparticles by studying the flow of a dense suspension of gear-shaped particles in a 2Dmicrofluidic hopper.By measuring the average number of particles escaping thechannel before a clog forms, we quantify the interplay between particle geometry ancsuspension fow.Our results demonstrate the competition between the ease ofinterlocking and the strenath of the resulting interlocked contacts.
