Abstract:

The emerging role of hydrogen in the energy transition is discussed widely with numerous applications being under consideration. These include use of hydrogen as an energy vector, a transport fuel, an industrial feedstock or fuel gas, and applications in decarbonised power generation. All of these proposed uses have certain merits and face specific challenges. An area of special interest is the use of hydrogen as a means of long-term energy storage to address the seasonal intermittency of renewable energy. In the first part of the lecture, energy storage and other large-scale applications of hydrogen will be reviewed, and some of the knowledge gaps, risks and economic challenges will be highlighted.

The thermophysical properties and phase behaviour of hydrogen, and its mixtures with other industrial fluids, play an important role in engineering processes for hydrogen production, transportation, storage and use. In the second part of the lecture, some of the knowledge gaps in this area will be highlighted. Aspects of our current research programme on hydrogen properties at Imperial College London will be detailed. This will include the following subtopics:

· hydrogen-brine properties for applications in underground hydrogen storage and natural hydrogen production

· hydrogen diffusivity in hydrocarbon liquids for applications in industrial processes

· precision measurements of pure-hydrogen properties for improved flow metrology

Introduction of speaker:

Martin Trusler is Professor of Thermophysics in the Department of Chemical Engineering at lmperial CollegeLondon. Prof. Trusler's research interests focus on measurement and modeling of the thermophysical propertiesand phase behaviour of fluids, especially under extreme conditions of temperature and pressure, with applicationsin carbon capture & storage, hydrogen infrastructure and the energy industries widely. He is a recipient of theGuggenheim Medal for contributions to research in thermodynamics. He is aFellow of the Royal Society otChemistry, an Associate Fellow of the lnstitution of Chemical Engineers and former editor of the Journal ohe has published over 250 papers in peer-reviewedChemical Thermodnamics.Over his research career.journals, supervised over 40 doctoral students to completion and led numerous research projects sponsored blindustry and public funding agencies. As a consultant, he has worked with leading companies on a variety ofenergyindustry related problems. He is currently Director of Postgraduate Studies in the Department of ChemicalEngineering at imperial.
